"I'm an English teacher, not fucking Tomb Raider"

Though you may not have heard of it, there's a movie out in a theater near you called "The Descent." The plot is one that any 13-year-old boy has probably already come up with while daydreaming through math class: Six hot ladies are trapped in an isolated cave system, and to make matters worse, there are a bunch of frothy-mouthed, screaming human/bat hybrids hunting them down. At the end credits, we find that these creatures, "perfectly evolved for living in caves," are called "crawlers." I guess it's a fitting name since they posses the spidermanesque ability to move swiftly over the walls and ceilings of the cave. Luckily for the hot ladies, the crawlers are completely blind and evidently have no sense of smell; unfortunately, they're really fast and have sharp teeth.
Ok, despite the cheesy improbablilities, "The Descent" was actually really enjoyable. Contrary to most horror/suspense film sexy ladies, the women are intelligent and competent. When faced with confined spaces and menacing creatures, they respond just as Ripley would, and deal out some seriously stone-cold cave justice.
There's very little surprising about "The Descent," but it's everything that I had hoped "Alien Vs. Predator" would be. Neil Marshall manages to keep the viewer extremely tense throughout the movie, with enough adrenaline-pumping jolts to kill a dachshund. Plus, there are some great moments which call to mind such favorites as "Carrie", "Apocalypse Now", and even "Blade Runner." It's not the kind of movie I usually go for, and it probably loses a lot outside of the theater, but I recommend.

seeing this movie up in LA with tony... the first thing out of my mouth when it was done was, "that was a damn fine horror flick." i was on the edge of my seat even though it was a bit predictable.

after seeing munich, i began to really appreciate over-the-top gore like this. while this is excellently movie-realistic (i wonder how many hundreds of gallons of corn syrup they went through during that one scene the pic is from).

that scene also begged the question... those things don't have genetalia. at least none that's visible. and yet there was a female creature (one helluva cat fight) - how the hell do those things reproduce? parthenogenically? budding? sporulation? aliens-style? who knows. i didn't think of that during the movie, which underscores the riveting nature of the thing.

see it.

and i agree with sam. i'm never going in a cave again :)
